US States Do Poorly in Women'sHealth

Not a single US state meets basicfederal goals for women's health, and the nation as a whole fails except in twoareas -- mammograms ( 乳腺X光照片) and dental (牙齒的) check-ups -- researchers said on Thursday.

Millions of women lack healthinsurance, and states make it difficult to enroll (加入) in Medicaid, thestate-federal health insurance plan for the poor, according to the report.

And few states are doing anywhere near enough to help women quit smoking -- theleading cause of death in the United States.

"The nation as a whole andthe individual states fall short of meeting national goals," reads thereport, put together by the National Women's Law Center and the Oregon Health& Science University. "These health goals provide a road map forassessing the status of women's health. "

Of 27 measures examined by thegroup, from screening for diseases to actually treating them, the nation passeson only two, the researchers said."The nation is so far from the healthgoals that it receives an overall grade of 'unsatisfactory' ," they wrote.

The problem seems to be a lack among states of an overall plan for health ingeneral, the NWLC said.

"State policy makers'piecemeal (一件一件做的) approach to our health care crisis has resulted in a complex andineffective system that fails to meet the health care needs of women,"Judy Waxman NWLC Vice President for Health, said in a statement.

Why are America's Kids SoStressed

I'm usually fairly skepticalabout any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappieror more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any ofthese statements might be true, they are practically impossible to provescientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today'schildren are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact,the analysis showed, normal children ages 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level ofanxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.

Why are America's kids sostressed? The report cites two main causes: increasing physical isolation --brought on by high divorce rates and less involvement in community, among otherthings -- and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.

Given that we can't turn theclock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation cope.

At the top ofthe list is nurturing a better appreciation of the limits of individualism. Nochild is an islanD.Strengthening social ties helps build communities andprotect individuals against stress.

To help kids build strongerconnections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Yourfamily will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-facerelationships, and they will get more sleep.

Limit the amount of virtualviolence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies;children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news.

Keep your expectations for yourchildren reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard orYale.

Make exercise part of your dailyroutine. It will help you cope with your own anxieties and provide a good modelfor your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruinyour life.
